When we moved into our new house, I knew I’d have lots of projects ahead of me and to keep from feeling overwhelmed, kept telling myself that I’d just take it one room at a time. Pick a room, make a list, cross things off as completed, and when finished move to the next room.
But, really, it was ridiculous for me to think I could operate that way because when it comes to house projects I should maybe be medicated for ADD.
I started off with such good intentions in the kitchen, staining and sealing the butcher block island, converting a couple recessed lights to hanging pendants, and making glass-front doors for the built-ins in the eating area.
But then I slowly found myself working on little projects outside of the kitchen.
I created an organized space for jewelry in my closet. I re-caulked the guest bathtub. And now I simultaneously have my hands in three different biggish projects all at the same time.

In the end, for better and worse, this just seems to be the way I operate!
So here’s where we are right now – a lot of progress but nothing finished yet.
I am itching to get the kitchen and family room painted and have been testing paints all over the two rooms. Grey is such a tricky color and finding one that worked with the light as true grey with very little blue, purple, or green took some trial and error.
I found the one, though, and am going to be painting the kitchen and family room Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray and the kitchen eating area BM Revere Pewter.
The wall between the kitchen and family room has been opened up on the family room side.
You can imagine my daughters’ sheer delight about the “fort” they discovered when we got home from our trip to FL last week, and then their crushing diappointment when I said they couldn’t play in it for safety reasons.
Who needs to be safe when there’s a FORT in your FAMILY ROOM??
The kitchen side is still intact, but not for long.
The new sink is being framed out today and the electricians are coming to do their thing. The plumber should be here Thursday or Friday and I’m hoping I can get the new counter templated then too.
And as if managing the kitchen project wasn’t enough, I decided to wallpaper the powder room last week.
I have fits of happiness every time I walk in this room. I love this wallpaper so much I kind of want to bring it to bed with me each night and snuggle it. You can see there is still some work to be done underneath – I have the wood for a wainscoting treatment and am hoping that will start to come together next week.
So, I’m curious – are you able to focus on one room at a time? Or are you all over the place like I am?
