Well that was some break! We returned from all of our holiday travels visiting family on Saturday night and dove right back into unpacking in our new house yesterday. Some of my choices were probably better than others. Instead of unpacking toiletries, for example, I unpacked my jewelry and carved out a little nook for it in my closet.
What can I say, a girl’s gotta accessorize!
We have a lot of work ahead of us. As many boxes as we’ve unpacked, we have about triple the amount still to go. But so it goes with a move, and we’ll chip away at it little by little. Here’s where things stand now…prepare to be underwhelmed.

The dining room and living room have since switched places from what you see above. We decided to use the larger room for dining and save the cozier space for a sitting room.
You can see, I’m sure, that we still have a long way to go! Deep breaths…
Project preparations are nonetheless underway, and it feels GREAT to be thinking about that kind of thing again after so many months of focusing on getting our old house ready for sale and then actually preparing to move. It feels like ages since I’ve been able to really sink my teeth into a project, and I am itching to get elbow-deep into something!
Here’s what lies ahead in the immediate future.
- Stain and seal the butcher block kitchen island. I already sanded it and have the sealer in hand, just waiting on the stain to arrive.
- I’m working on a little project with Home Depot that will involve some kitchen storage/organization solutions, but not sure how much I’m to say at this point…so will just leave it at that for now :)
- The TV is going back up over the family room mantle. Electrician is coming this week to go over what we want to have done – moving some interior lights around and adding electric baseboards to the finished basement, which we just discovered isn’t heated. And which does not make for a very practical playroom in Boston in January.
- Our favorite carpenter/contractor is also coming by this week to talk about the few kitchen modifications we want to make – replacing a small strip of counter, opening up the wall between the kitchen and family room, and installing a ceramic apron front sink. I’ll be painting the cabinets myself again.
- Concerting two recessed lights above the kitchen island to pendant lights. The new lights are already on their way!
- Converting the blinding recessed overhead light in the powder room to a softer pendant light. That light has also been ordered and will be here soon!
Believe it or not, this is only barely scratching the surface of things I need and want to do around here. It’s funny how you can fall in love with a house – which I absolutely have here – and still have so many plans to tweak it. Though a lot still to be done has to do with setting up rooms how I really want them to be and all the fun projects that go along with that kind of thing for me.
So, there you have it, the state of things around here after a long silence from me. It feels good to be back, and I’ll be bringing you along every step of the way as we start knocking out projects.
Happy new year to you all!
