This post is like one part nepotism and one part public service announcement, because the farm I’m about to introduce you to is run tirelessly by my cousin and produces some of the best-quality and best-tasting products that have crossed these lips.
And, just a heads up, if you are appalled by animal farming, you might want to stop right here. As far as I’m concerned, this farm is run the way farms should be run, but it’s still an animal farm. Just wanted to disclose that up front :)

My cousin, Nolan, began talking about starting a farm a few years ago and I think pretty much everyone in my family was like, “Oh, wow, yeah, that sounds interesting.” But seriously, what did Nolan know about farming?? (The answer to that question was pretty much nothing) We come from a family of enthusiastic eaters and generally health-conscious people, and Nolan’s part of the family always had lots of animals around, but farmers we are not.
Well…he sure showed us who knows something about farming now. Just look at those suspenders. Don’t they just scream “farmer??”
For real, though, to say Nolan has worked his tail off learning farming these last several years would be a colossal understatement. He has worked his TAIL off and then some. The farm is absolutely incredible – every time I’m there I’m completely awed at how gorgeous and professional and efficient it is. And just…legit. It’s not that I didn’t think Nolan could do it. It’s just that I never could have imagined how impossibly bucolic and yet supremely professional it could be all at the same time.
I’m so overwhelmingly impressed by and proud of my little cousin. Who is not so little anymore, at 6’5″…but I still have a good ten years on him :)
Now for the PSA part…Stryker Farm (which is named after our grandmom) now has an online store! So if you don’t live in or around the rolling hills of Saylorsburg, PA but do live in the continental US, you can enjoy products from the farm.
And they are kind of outrageously good. Scott had the good fortune to have Nolan as his Secret Santa for Christmas this year and we have been sampling a lot of tasty treats since getting home from PA last weekend.
When I’m at the farm, I’m also so struck by how the animals live. I know some of them are being raised for meat, but they look happy. They’re living outside and eating natural diets and just kind of running (chickens) or lying (pigs) around and it just feels like the way things should be. There’s a blog section to the Stryker Farm website, and Nolan said this week, “As a livestock farmer, I try my best to give my animals a happy, stress-free life. That’s the only way I can justify butchering them in the end.” And I really feel that when I’m there. Nolan is so personally kind toward all of the animals and really cares about what they eat and how they spend their days.
The farm isn’t certified organic, because it’s still small and can’t afford the extensive process to get government certified. But its practices go beyond organic. You can read a list of FAQs to get more information on life on the farm and the quality of the meat.
With so many people turning to Paleo and Whole30 programs lately, and the focus those and other programs have on high-quality meats, I thought this was a great time to share with you. The meats are truly superb. Everything freezes beautifully too so you can order a big batch of stuff and feel really, really good knowing that you both supported a small and well-run farm and are eating some of the best-quality meat out there.
